John M. Tatum
DOB:  About 1839 DOD:  November 25, 1863 Age at Enlistment: About 22 Date of Enlistment:  May 9, 1861 Place of Enlistment:  Franklin, TN Rank at Enlistment:  Private Rank at Discharge:  Private Casualty:  He was killed at the Battle of Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863.  Comments:  John first appears in the 1850 Census living in Mechanicsville, TN in Rutherford County.  By the 1860 Census he is living with his mother and the census states he cannot read.  He enlisted in the Company at its formation at the beginning of the war and served until 1863.  In December 1862, the regiment was at Murfreesboro and John left temporarily to return to Franklin to marry Adelia Sweeney on December 22, 1862.  A few days later Federal troops attacked Franklin and not long after that the Battle of Murfreesboro was fought.  Following the Battle it is very likely that John never saw Adelia again.  At the Battle of Missionary Ridge, on November 25, 1863, the 1st Tennessee was ordered from their reserve position into the works held by a Confederate regiment that was out of ammunition.  The regiment went forward and ended up charging down the hill and driving the Federals off the field.  Somewhere in this charge John lost his life.  It is assumed he is buried somewhere in an unmarked grave aroun Chattanooga.  The Confederates were driven from the ridge later that day and they did not have time to bury their dead.
