Edwin Harrison Hill
DOB:  February 1841 DOD:  August 22, 1908 Age at Enlistment: 20 Date of Enlistment:  May 9, 1861 Place of Enlistment:  Franklin, TN Rank at Enlistment:  Private Rank at Discharge:  Private Casualty:  Wounded slightly in the hand at Murfreesboro on December 31, 1862.  Wounded again during the Dalton Campaign according to Chattanooga Daily Rebel (battle unknown).  Captured July 3, 1864 near the Chattahoochee River and sent to Camp Douglas. Comments:  Edwin first appears on the 1850 census living with an Elliott family in District 19 of Williamson County (between Nolensville and Triune).  The Elliotts moved to Texas in the 1850’s and Edwin next appears on the 1860 living in District 1 (near Fairview) with the Beohm family.  He and Henry Wagoner (also in Company D) were living with the family working as saddlers.  No evidence has been found of who Edwin’s parents were.  He maybe a cousin of the other two Hill’s that served in the company.  Edwin appears on his service record as Edward H. Hill and sometimes as Edmond Hill.  His name appears as Edwin in the census records, his prisoner of war record, and when his wife applied for a pension.  Edwin appears to be his real name but it is believed he went by “Ed” and everyone assumed it was short for Edward or Edmond since those names were more common at the time.  Even the two witnesses for his wife’s pension thought his full name was Edward.  Edwin was wounded slightly at the Battle of Murfreesboro.  The Chattanooga Daily Rebel ran a list of casualties in the 1st Tennessee in July 1864.  All the names on the list were casualties leading up to the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.  Edwin is listed as wounded but he has no medical record stating he was wounded or where.  He was captured near the Chattahoochee River on July 3, 1864.  This is the same day the Confederates abandoned the Kennesaw Line.  Not sure if he was captured in a hospital or not.  He was moved to Camp Douglas near Chicago and stayed there until taking the oath of allegiance on March 6, 1865.  His oath record describes him as Complexion: Fair, Hair: Brown, Eyes: Light Brown, Height: 5'11", and Residence Williamson County.  Following the war he moved to Rusk County, TX where he married Laura V. Caulder on January 13, 1869.  By 1880 they are living in Tarrant County, TX had they have two children.  Laura passed away between 1880 and 1883.  Edwin remarried to Codie Bell, who was 27 years his junior, on March 25, 1883.  It appears this marriage produced at least one more child.  In 1892, Edwin is listed as living in Fort Worth and in 1907 he is living in Dallas according to city directories.  He worked as a saddler/harness maker his entire life.  Edwin died in Dallas in 1908.
