DOB:  August 31, 1840 DOD:  February 19, 1913 Age at Enlistment: 20 Date of Enlistment:  May 9, 1861 Place of Enlistment:  Franklin, TN Rank at Enlistment:  Private Rank at Discharge:  Private Casualty:  None with the 1st TN, captured in 1863 and wounded trying to escape after capture Comments:  The 1850 and 1860 Census shows Peter living in the 9th District or the suburbs of Franklin.  In 1860, he is working as a clerk.  Peter received a medical discharge after being declared unfit for duty at Tupelo, MS on July 4, 1862.  He reenlisted in the 7th Kentucky Cavalry Company B and was captured near Buffington Island, OH on July 19, 1863 during Morgan’s Raid.  While on the train headed towards the prison camp, Peter attempted to escape and was shot by one of the guards.  His arm had to be amputated.  He was exchanged on February 24, 1865 after spending time at Camp Morton and Camp Douglas.  Peter recuperated at Camp Lee after his exchange an took the Oath of Allegiance on May 2, 1865.  His prison papers describe him as Complexion: Dark, Hair: Dark, Eyes: Gray, Height: 5'10".  After the war he married Josephine O. Anderson in Hickman County, TN on February 29, 1876.  The couple had 3 children.  According to the 1880 Census he was a school teacher in Marshall County and by the 1900 Census he was an Insurance Agent in Nashville, which he appears to have spent the rest of his life doing.  He is buried in Section B-65 of Mount Hope Cemetery in Franklin, TN next to his wife.  He is sometimes referred to as Captain Peter Williams but he never held that rank in the military.
